Overview
Our popular and industry-relevant Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science MSc programme is designed for graduates in chemistry or closely related disciplines who wish to contribute to drug development and analysis, a process which requires multidisciplinary skills.
The MSc programme in Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science is taught via a combination of self-learning and short courses with practical laboratory sessions and formal assessment by coursework and examination. There are a range of optional modules to choose from in addition to the compulsory modules which all MSc students take. The programme runs for a full calendar year, starting at the beginning of October and completing at the end of September the following year. The Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science programme can also be studied part-time over a period of 2-5 years.
The School of Science has invested £0.5 million in new equipment for the new £17 million STEM teaching lab facility that this programme will be taught in.
You will have access to a broad range of scientific instrumentation including: 400 MHz, 500 MHz, solid-state and bench-p NMR spectrometers, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers, a high resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer, GC-MS and linear ion trap LC-mass spectrometers, ion mobility spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographs and tunable nanopore sensors.
The MSc Chemical Sciences programmes at Loughborough were ranked above the sector average on all 9 units of assessment in the 2016 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey. These programmes attract students from all over the world with students from a wide range of different countries including China, Nigeria, Oman, USA, UK, Brunei, Latvia and India.

What you'll study

Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science comprises a broad range of modules covering the major aspects of analytical and pharmaceutical chemistry, complemented by studies in transferable and professional skills.

Modules

Compulsory and optional modules are taught during two semesters (October to February and February to June) and are assessed by a combination of coursework and/or formal examinations. The Research Training Project is based either on placement in industry or with a research group in the Chemistry Department. Your research project commences in May and continues through until September.

Literature searching in chemical or environmental science; statistical evaluation of data in analytical science and transferable skills useful for personal and professional development.

Methods and application of the principal analytical separation techniques, including gas and liquid chromatography, electrophoretic techniques, and their applications in pharmaceutical, bioanalysis, environmental, food and related areas.

Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism (15 credits)

Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism (15 credits)

Processes involved in the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs; kinetic modelling of these processes, test systems available and application of this information to drug development.

Spectroscopy and Structural Analysis (15 credits)

Instrumental methods for analysis of inorganic and organic materials, including: X-ray powder diffraction; IR, Raman, UV-Vis, fluorescence, NMR; thermal methods (combustion analysis, TG, DTA, DSC); interpretation of mass spectra. Principles, problem-solving and determining structures from mixed sets of spectroscopic data.

Information retrieval, preparation of a dissertation (literature review) and project planning in preparation for project module; health and safety; the analytical process; quality systems overview: ISO 9000, ISO 17025, GLP; quality assurance; auditing; proficiency testing; intellectual property.

Student specific research training project focussed on the discipline in the award title, including planning and execution of a research or development work programme designed to address specified aims as agreed with the project supervisor, based in industry or at the University.
