About this course

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English (language). A qualification in a practical Art subject is not specifically required. An enquiring mind and the ability to research information and meet deadlines are important.

AS and A2 level Art - Critical and Contextual Studies

The Critical and Contextual Studies course focuses on the theoretical aspect of art in all its forms. You will learn not only about art itself but also about the time in which it was created. We will research the theories of Art and Design, examining the political and social influences that provide the backdrop to artistic production, and investigate the tools, materials and techniques used in that production.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
Your studies will focus on a range of art movements and the artists associated with them. You will be encouraged to research and find information of your own, to inform individual study and analyse art work both past and present.

You will share your ideas with others, take part in debates and visit exhibitions and events relevant to your areas of study.

At Advanced level you will additionally focus on research for your own study of an area of Art History which you are personally interested in, as well as learning about significant art movements in greater depth.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Lessons will be spent learning about art movements, using the information to stimulate personal research linked to specific tasks. You will be encouraged to use the extensive College library and the Internet to inform your studies. Emphasis will also be placed on engaging with the latest thinking within the art world, enabling you to study in more depth areas that you find especially interesting.
You will also learn about how signs and meanings are used in art to convey meaning. We will look at the difference in attitudes to the production of art across nations and societies and the functions it has performed.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
The AS units will be:

·Coursework
·An externally set assignment
Your workbook will be regularly reviewed during the course.

The A2 units will be:

·Coursework a personal study
·An externally set assignment

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH CRITICAL AND CONTEXTUAL STUDIES?
You can choose to do Critical and Contextual Studies with a wide range of other subjects. It fits particularly well with other creative subjects and with the humanities.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
You could enter employment or continue your studies at Higher Education. Critical and Contextual Studies has proved a useful addition to other qualifications when considering application to a degree course.
