About this course

You must have grade C in either English (language) or English Literature. Prior experience of dance will be an advantage. You will be expected to rehearse in groups, sometimes out of College hours. A commitment to this is essential.

AS and A2 level Dance

The course is designed to give you a theoretical and practical experience and understanding of dance. You will acquire experience of choreography and performance to engage you in critical thinking about the subject. Study of dance will help you to gain knowledge and understanding of the dancer in action and of the skills involved in performance. You will develop appreciation skills through the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of dances. Historical and cultural appreciation of dance development will deepen your understanding of this inspirational art form.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
AS Dance will cover:

·Understanding Dance

his unit focuses on knowledge and understanding arrived at through critical thinking on: the dancer as a performer; the process of craft and choreography; dance studio practice; and significance of dances.

·Solo: Choreography and Performance and Performance in a duo/trio
- t
his unit focuses on the knowledge and skills required to choreograph and perform a solo dance as well as performing in the context of a duo/trio.

A2 Dance will cover:

·Appreciation: Content and Context
- t
his unit focuses on knowledge and understanding arrived at through critical analysis and interpretation of dances and of the context in which they are presented and derived. One set work is central to these studies along with an investigation of a chosen area of study within Ballet, Modern or Jazz dance.

·Group Choreography and Solo Performance
- t
his unit focuses on knowledge and skills required to choreograph for a group and to prepare and present group work for performance. It also focuses on presenting a solo performance in a style linked to a specific practitioner from the written unit.



WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Most of the time you will be performing and choreographing, learning to perform in different dance styles, both on your own and in a group. Dance theory lessons will introduce you to dance appreciation, dance history and the dancer in action.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
Through a combination of practical assessment of performance and choreography and written examination.

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH DANCE?
Dance will combine well with any other subject.
