A Level Applied ICT will prepare you for a world increasingly dominated by the use of computer systems. This interesting, hands-on course will encourage you to develop the excellent practical skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT needed for any career or university course.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
During the Applied ICT course you will become confident with ICT as you develop coursework assignments using a variety of software including Dreamweaver CS3, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Project. Throughout this course you will have good opportunities to develop an important set of skills such as team working, problem solving, managing time effectively and self evaluation.

â€" You will investigate effective methods of communication then plan and develop a variety of near-professional documents (including business documents, multi-media presentations and an interactive e-book) using a wide selection of software. When complete, your portfolio will demonstrate your impressive software and presentation skills.

â€" In this unit you will learn about how organisations are structured and how they use and exchange information. You will learn how ICT helps organisations and how it supports the different activities they undertake. This is an examined unit and is based on a case study that will be studied and work on in class before the assessment.

In this coursework unit you will have an opportunity to discover how the availability of ICT affects individuals and society on a global scale. You will also be developing a solution to a problem by effectively searching the www and databases, analysing numbers in a spreadsheet and displaying the results of your investigation in a presentation.

The A2 is 100% coursework:


·Web Design
â€" You will plan, design and create a professional, interactive website that will be published on a web server. You will have the chance to develop excellent skills in Dreamweaver CS3, HTML and graphics packages.

·Spreadsheet Modelling
â€" In this unit you will have the chance to develop business standard spreadsheet skills whilst producing a complex spreadsheet model for an end user.

·Working to a brief
â€" An important skill in any profession is the ability to manage a project effectively. By the end of this unit you will be able to use planning skills, team working and project management tools to plan and implement a project.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?

Applied ICT is a largely hands-on course and you will spend a good amount of time using computers to develop and apply your skills to coursework projects. Your supportive teacher will help you to develop a broad range of IT knowledge and skills using a variety of teaching methods and lots of helpful resources which will all be available both in your classroom and online. You will be encouraged to carry out independent research, engage in group work and create presentations. We bring your IT learning to life by arranging a number of educational talks and trips which are designed to help you with your coursework and to show you how ICT is used in the â€OEreal world†.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The majority of the course is assessed with coursework; there is one examined unit in the first year.

WHAT QUALIFICATION DO I NEED TO TAKE THE COURSE?
To study the A level Applied ICT youmust have achieved four GCSEs at grade C or above including English (language) and Maths. Previous experience in ICT is not required, your enthusiasm and commitment are much more important.

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH ICT?

Applied ICT goes well with all subjects as most of our students are aiming for a diverse range of careers. Some of our students intend to follow a career in Computing or IT and study other technology and business related subjects.

Applied ICT is a very useful qualification whether you intend to move on to university or go directly to employment.
