Introduction to course
Students who love reading, theatre, writing and language will find plenty to interest them in the English Department. All classes take place in a dedicated suite of rooms where you will also find computers, DVDs and other resources to extend your studies. Students may attend conferences and workshops and theatre performances

Course Details
This analytical and creative course is appropriate for students who enjoy finding out how language works, including studying grammar and the development of English. You will study a wide range of different types of language in use, including conversation, regional dialects, journalism and literary texts. We discuss issues concerning language and social class, gender, power, attitudes to accents, how children acquire language and how language is constantly changing. Writing in different styles is an important part of the course. In the second year you will have the opportunity to do a language investigation in an area that interests you.
