About this course

At least 4 GCSEs at grades D or above preferably to include Science, Mathematics and English or successful completion of a level 1 qualification in a relevant area at merit level with appropriate references.

Aim This 1 year course gives you the opportunity to develop the skills needed for working in the animal care industry. You will study the care and husbandry of both exotic and companion animals, investigating animal organisations and welfare issues.
Content The qualification is made up of 3 core units and 3 specialist units.
All students will study the core units:
· Work related experience in animal care
· Industry and organisations
· Animal accommodation, handling and care.

Specialist units may include:
· Animal nursing
· Exotic animals
· Animal breeds and grooming
· Animal establishments
· Animal health, welfare and behaviour.

This is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

Progression/career opportunities This qualification can develop the skills you need to start or progress in careers such as kennels, animal welfare charities, breed and grooming, zoos and animal collections, pet shop care and sales. Alternatively you may wish to progress to a more advanced course such as the National Diploma - Animal Management.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
