What are the Course Details?
This course is designed to prepare learners for a career in the Health and Social Care sector or for progression to the Level 3 courses in either Health Studies, Social Care or Childcare and Education. The course also provides some of the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care.

Is the Course for Me?
You should have a caring attitude and an ability to work within a team coupled with a desire to work within the Social Care sector.

What are the Entry Requirements?
To be eligible for this course you will need to have at least four GCSE's with at least one GCSE at Grade C and others at Grade D in academic subjects. Learners gaining or possessing a BTEC Introductory Diploma in Health & Social Care or Foundation in Childcare at Merit Level would also be considered. All applicants must have a satisfactory school/college report.
Learners will need to obtain an appropriate level of Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Certificate to attend placement. (Learners will need to pay for this).

What will I Learn?
The course comprises of six units. To achieve the qualification the learner must complete the following compulsory units:
  • Communication & Individual Rights in a Health or Social Care Setting
  • Individual Needs within the Health & Social Care Sectors

Plus four from the following specialist units:
  • Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting
  • Cultural Diversity in Health & Social Care
  • Anatomy & Physiology for Health & Social Care
  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Creative & Therapeutic Activities in Health & Social Care
  • Health & Social Care Services
  • The Impact of Diet on Health

How will I Learn?
The course is delivered by staff who possess both professional and educational qualifications. This is essential when relating theory to practice. Learners will experience a variety of teaching and learning methods including role play, practical activities, group work and more formal lessons providing underpinning knowledge.

How will I be Assessed?
Assessment on the course is continuous and involves the completion of assignments, group presentations and practical activities together with reports from work experience settings.
Learners' work on additional qualifications is assessed using a variety of methods such as portfolios of work, scenario-based assignments and external examinations.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. There is also an opportunity for learners to gain additional qualifications, enabling them to obtain a wider understanding of Health and Social Care and increasing prospects for employment or further education, such as the NCFE Certificate in Developing Skills with Children and Young People and Certificate in Creative Craft.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits may be arranged to complement your studies. Learners are encouraged to take part in College organised enrichment activities.

Is there any Work Experience?
As part of the course you are required to undertake a period of work experience in a variety of health and social care settings, for example, day and residential care settings, primary schools, nurseries and other specialist centres. Learners will need to pay for travel costs to and from placements (where applicable) but anyone experiencing financial difficulty may apply to the College for financial assistance.

What can I Progress to?
On completion, a learner may seek employment as a care assistant for vulnerable young people, adults and older people or as a nursery assistant for children. The qualification provides an opportunity to progress onto a higher level course, for example, the National Diploma in Health Studies or Social Care, or the Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare & Education.

Many ex-College learners have been successful in gaining employment with local employers and progressing onto higher level courses.
