Some of our earliest images are of animals. They have been portrayed symbolically in Christian Art as incarnations of gods or simply as favourite pets. Some artists focused on hunting and racing scenes or made a living from 'potraits' of well-bred livestock! Explore this fascinating subject through the works of Durer, van Eyck, Stubbs, Landseer, Rousseau, Degas, Marc, Hockney and Hirst.
