The Academy of Art University’s School of Art History BA program is a unique major that addresses the traditional art historical study through analysis of visual culture from antiquity to present. Complemented with fine art studio coursework (12 units), the BA allows for students to engage in critical and research-based analysis of art and architecture, learning to study the visual culture through its role and influence on different cultures and periods. With internationally recognized faculty and access to a rich offering of coursework, the AAU’s Art History BA prepares students for a career in art-related fields: e.g. in art galleries, museums, foundations, archiving, publishing and public arts administration.

About this course

Undergraduate students will meet the following student performance criteria:

Knowledge

Demonstrate proficient knowledge of art historical issues through a final written thesis
Intelligently discuss art and architecture from the major Western traditions and the artists that produced them
Analyze the stylistic characteristics of Western art and architecture using appropriate terminology
Analyze the social, political, historical and religious contexts of Western art and architecture
Art and Design Skills

Develop an understanding of the materials and methods of fine art production in relation to the art historical narrative
Research and Analysis

Research and persuasively analyze an art historical issue and/or theoretical position
Apply theoretical and methodological approaches to the interpretation of Western art and architecture
Communication Skills

Clearly express their ideas though reflective writing and researched presentations
Speak, read and write on a basic level in a foreign (European) language

Minimum grade of C- in all core courses, major courses, studio coursework, LA 107 Writing for the Multilingual Artist or LA 108 Composition for the Artist, and LA 202 English Composition: Creative Persuasion & Argument or LA 207 Persuasion & Argument for the Multilingual Writer.
Minimum 2.0 GPA and the following general education requirements:
