The focus of the course is to develop your understanding of criminology principles and theories, and their practical application, particularly in the context of crime reduction and prevention. Suitable for: The MSc Applied Criminology is for professionals who have employment roles within Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CRDPs), or for graduates with career interests in social and community aspects of crime. It may also be of interest to probation officers, social workers, the police and those employed in voluntary agencies which interface with the criminal justice system.

About this course

Normally, you should have at least an upper second class honours degree (2:1), preferably in social sciences, criminology or law.

If English is not your first language you will also need IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent).

About the course

You will study through a mix of lectures, seminars, group work, workshops as well as personal study. Talks by guest lecturers will give you the opportunity to hear speakers who are professionals working in the sector.

Some of the teaching staff have worked in the field of crime reduction, ensuring you have access to applied expertise and experience throughout your studies.

The department is small which means there are excellent levels of contact and interaction with teaching staff and your fellow students.

What you will learn

You will learn about different aspects of criminal behaviour including biological, psychological and sociological, types of offending, punishment and concepts of crime prevention.

You will consider the key policies and research practices which underpin the study of victims and risk and also examine the wider concepts of community and the practicalities of inter-agency working in the context of crime reduction and prevention.

A key component of the course is the development of social research methods in which you will learn about different approaches to the study of social issues, the use and analysis of data, and the philosophical and ethical considerations of carrying out social research.

You will submit a dissertation, on a subject to be agreed with your tutor, which will involve both theoretical and empirical components. In this context, you will develop your skills of independent study, self motivation, reasoning, creative thinking, analysis and the clear articulation of your ideas.
