Additional Information: In exceptional circumstances a student with 4 GCSEs including Double Science, Maths and English Language (at Grade C or above) will be considered subject to the availability of places.

COURSE OUTLINE
This is a two-year full-time course equivalent to two A Levels at Grades A-E. The course is designed to provide experience of activities carried out by scientists. It allows students to apply and build on their existing science knowledge, skills and understanding in an industry related context. Upon successful completion of this course students will be qualified to seek employment or undertake further study, such as HND/Degree courses in an applied science related subject.

The following units are compulsory:
  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Scientific Investigation
  • Scientific Practical Techniques
  • Perceptions of Science
  • Application of Number for Science Technicians

Specialist units will include:
  • Mathematics for Science Technicians
  • Statistics for Science Technicians
  • Medical Physics Techniques
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Biochemical Techniques
  • Informatics

Assessment is continuous and carried out throughout the year through assignments, presentations and practical work. At the end of the course you will be given a double grade worth the same as 2 A Levels. You will also be enrolled on AS Use of Maths which is a new course at SFX, and will count towards your UCAS points should you choose to apply to university.
