Course programme
Course description: All training on this course is delivered either in the workplace or at College, on a day release basis.
This Apprenticeship programme is designed for new entrants to a role in the IT and Telecoms sector, and to provide progression and re-skilling routes for existing IT Professionals. Apprentices can work in areas such as software and web development, technical support, telecommunications and IT project management.
The framework includes a balance of content in technical, business and interpersonal areas, designed to ensure apprentices have an appropriate set of skills to operate in today’s IT and telecoms job roles.
The technical content includes units for software development, web development, technical support, telecommunications and databases. In addition to generic units, the apprenticeship contains 'vendor' and industry recognised content from Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, VM Ware and CompTIA.
Entry requirements: There are no formal qualifications for this course. Apprentices who took their GCSEs more than five years ago and did not gain a C grade or above will need to take a literacy and numeracy test. Applicants will also be asked to attend a pre-enrolment Interview.
Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16, whether they have just left school or have been working for years. As an apprenticeship is a work based qualification, applicants should either have an employer who has agreed to support them, or be seeking an apprenticeship position through our vacancies list. Once you have secured a position with an employer your training can begin.
Objective: Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
Assessment: Assessment is via a variety of techniques and in many cases will be based on performance in the workplace.
The formal qualifications will generally be taught at college setting, and assessed using assignments or tests, in order to ensure the apprentice has gained the underpinning theory and principles required for the role.
Academic progression: Having completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship, apprentices may then progress on to a
Advanced Apprenticeship or continue to work and undertake a range of professional job-specific
qualifications and training. Alternatively, apprentices may elect to return to full-time education, and to complete A Levels, the IT Diploma, BTECs or an equivalent qualification.
Career progression: Students may progress into careers as support technicians, website managers, helpdesk professionals or in field operations.
Costs: Training on the Apprenticeships programme is currently funded for apprentices aged 16 - 18 years at the time of enrolment. An employer contribution is required for those aged either 19+ or who have a level 4 or higher qualification.
