Summary: This work based course develops the skills and knowledge needed for a wide range of careers working in retail.








Course description: All training on this course is delivered either in the workplace or at college, on a day release basis.
This Apprenticeship is ideal for developing skills and knowledge whilst working within the fast-paced world of retail.  It develops the skills and knowledge needed to be an effective employee within the retail sector. It is recommended for employees who work in retail and who want to further their career and gain a qualification through a flexible combination of training and assessment in the workplace.
In this course, learning is based around how a variety of retail services functions including the different methods used by retail organisations to inform customers about products, help customers to choose products, deal with customer queries, process payments, fashion retailing – the selling of clothing, footwear and accessories  - and the wide variety of opportunities and career pathways in the retail sector.
The full apprenticeship programme is built up of a framework consisting of:

OCR Level 3 Certificate in Retail Knowledge (QCF)

OCR Level 3 Certificate in Retail Skills (QCF)

Functional Skills in English Level 1 and 2 and Mathematics Level 1 and 2
The Retail Skills Academy at City College Norwich is a member of the National Skills Academy for Retail and provides access to consistent, high quality training for retail businesses.

Entry requirements: Applicants to the Advanced Apprenticeship programme should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed a level 2 programme, or a reasonable level of professional experience. Apprentices who took their GCSEs more than five years ago and did not gain a C grade or above may need to take a literacy and numeracy test. Applicants will also be invited to attend a pre-enrolment interview.
Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16, whether they have just left school or have been working for years. As an apprenticeship is a work based qualification, applicants should either have an employer who has agreed to support them, or be seeking an apprenticeship position through our vacancies list. Once you have secured a position with an employer your training can begin.









Learning outcome: This qualification offers the unique opportunity to earn and learn in this sector. Retail is the largest private sector employer in the UK and is very diverse, ranging from the corner shop to the largest department store and to the new internet-based retail outlets. 
Real work experience, which is personalised to each student’s aspirations and interests, is integrated into the programme.









Objective: Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications.









Assessment: Training and assessments are mainly delivered in the workplace, though some of the content can be delivered in college. Assessment is via a variety of methods, including case studies, assignments, practical assessments and projects.









Academic progression: Successful students may include continue onto a Higher Apprenticeship or seek options within further and higher education.









Career progression: Career progression from this course could include as a craft expert, branch manager, style advisor or team supervisor or into specialist roles such as staff development.









Costs: Training on the Apprenticeships programme is currently funded for apprentices aged 16 - 18 years at the time of enrolment.  An employer contribution is required for those aged either 19+ or who have a level 4 or higher qualification.
