The Installation/Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship is for those wishing to gain the skills to work in industrial, commercial and domestic environments installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems. There are two pathways within this apprenticeship which learners can choose from: Installation or Maintenance. Apprentices will work with an array of electrical equipment and systems which may include renewable energy technologies, alarm systems, heating and motors.

Knowledge

You will develop the following knowledge to Level 3 standard:

• Understand health and safety regulations when working with electrical systems

• Understand the principles underpinning electrical systems associated with design, build and install

• Understand the electrotechnical equipment installed in buildings, structures and the environment

• Understand the inspection, testing and commissioning practices

• Understand the process for diagnosing faults in electrotechnical systems

Skills

You will be able to exhibit the following skills to Level 3 standard:

• Apply practices and legislation when terminating and connecting conductors, cables and cords

• Undertake preparation and installation of wiring systems

• Prepare the planning and selection of electrotechnical equipment

• Carry out relevant safety checks applying environmental regulations, relevant codes of practice and wiring regulations

Course programme

Suitable job roles upon completion of this apprenticeship are Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician. Once qualified the apprentice can apply to be recognised by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) as an Engineering Technician. This will enable them to have professional recognition and adopt (EngTech) in their title.

Individual employers will identify any relevant entry requirements in terms of previous qualifications, trainability tests, or other criteria. Candidates will have Functional Skills including English and maths at level 2 on entry. Apprentice candidates should not be on any other Government-funded training; must hold a contract of employment of at least 30 hours per week and must not be self-employed. Residency conditions apply and apprenticeship candidates must be at least 16 years old.

This Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification is assessed by an end-point assessment
which comprises of:

• Synoptic Knowledge Test

• Practical Skills Test

• Professional Discussion

This apprenticeship is delivered mostly in the workplace with college day release one day per week during term time.
