Art & Design Foundation Degree Level 4

About the course:
This course provides a range of four-year full-time degree courses in art, design and media subjects. Each has an integrated Foundation Year, which is delivered full-time in one academic year at Southampton City College.

The Foundation Year aims progressively to build a firm base of intellectual and practical knowledge and skills, experience, confidence, and a portfolio of work, for progression to specialist study for an Honours degree in art, design and related media.

It begins with an induction week during which students orientate themselves towards higher education study, and to drawing and design processes, problem analysis, location work, research methods and time management.

The programme focuses on common core areas in art, design, and related media. Its organisation highlights links and relationships within and across specialist boundaries, to develop in each student a more informed involvement with art and design processes and professional practice. There is an end-of-year show of students' artworks for invited guests.

The following University degree courses are to be supported by the Level O programme delivered by the College: BA (Hons) Animation BA (Hons) Fine Art BA (Hons) Fine Art Media BA (Hons) Illustration BA (Hons) Photography BA (Hons) Fashion BA (Hons) Fashion with Photography and BA (Hons) Graphic Design.

Course Content:
The year consists of two periods of study of 13 teaching weeks each. The program is primarily coursework based with submission of portfolio evidence at appropriate course stages. Presentations, essay and sketchbook work also forms part of the assessment requirements.

The programme/scheme aims to:
  • Develop research skills, analytical skills, contextual referencing and interpretative abilities Ttrough drawing and observation .
  • Prepare learners with a breadth of creative and cognitive skills to support progression onto Year 1 of their chosen pathway at Southampton Solent University.
  • Equip learners with knowledge and understanding of the creative process to fulfil projects within specialist pathways.
  • Provide learning opportunities that develop knowledge of, and raise awareness of career opportunities.
  • Enable learners to produce creative solutions related to their chosen specialist pathway.
  • Develop individual intellectual capabilities, through strategic, critical thinking and problem solving.


Learning Style:
Classes take place in specifically designed studios and involve a range of activities including group and individual work. Exciting assignments are designed to prepare the student for progression onto their University pathway choice. Learning takes place in workshops, lectures, seminars, tutorials, group and individual critiques and presentations.

Equipment Requirements:
A wide variety of art and design specialist equipment is used throughout the year. Students are expected to provide basic equipment and most expendable materials. The college will provide some basic items. A full list is available on request but will vary in cost depending on specialist pathway interest.

Assessment:
Students will be given specific submission dates for the submission of coursework evidence. Formative feedback takes place throughout the course with formal written and verbal feedback at the two major assessment points at the end of period 1 & 2.

Progression:
Students that complete the necessary number of credits over the course duration have the right to progress to level 1 of the three-year degree pathway at Southampton Solent University, without the need to reapply through UCAS.

Requirement
Applicants aged 21 or under must normally have achieved the following qualifications before enrolment:
2 A level passes at grade D or above, and 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, including an A level art subject
or a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in a relevant discipline together with two GCSE passes.
or satisfactory completion of a GNVQ level 3 course in art & design at merit or distinction level, 120 tariff points plus a satisfactory portfolio of artwork and an interview.
Mature students may be eligible for admission without the qualifications indicated above, provided they can demonstrate their capacity to benefit from their chosen degree course and an ability to complete. Mature students will be required to provide a suitable portfolio of artwork and will normally be interviewed. If appropriate, this process is arranged by contacting the Admissions Officer.
There are different UCAS codes for the main degree and the degree with a Foundation Year. Students must ensure that the correct UCAS code, as listed below, is entered on the application form; if this is entered incorrectly, it may affect the students' eligibility to proceed to the main degree, or may affect the student's right to funding for their studies. The admission policy is designed to enable students from a variety of educational backgrounds to be admitted to the Foundation Year. Providing they can adequately demonstrate the creative and educational potential, personal commitment and attitude to work which are necessary for successful completion. Applicants are normally expected to attend an interview at which they will show and discuss their portfolio of recent work in art and design. Submission of an essay of 1,000 words may also be required.
Prospective students are invited to book visits to Southampton City College and Southampton Solent University Open Days, which include tours of facilities and talks with course leaders.
