Course programme



This programme is primarily designed for students who have completed their GCSEs or a relevant Level 2 qualification and intend on pursuing a career in the artistic and design sectors. During the year you will take a broad approach to art and design and experiment with different media.


This course will offer you with an ideal preparation for pursing a career in within the fields of art and design. Throughout the year, you will learn a broad approach about the industry and experiment with different types of media and develop presentation and exhibition skills.


The programme is taught using a mixture of practical studio activities, seminars, tutorials, lectures and personal study. You will also engage in GEM and GAP activities to develop your English, maths and employability skills.


Course Content
The Art and Design UAL Diploma Level 3 may include following units

  • Introduction to Research Skills

  • Introduction to Critical and Contextual Awareness

  • Introduction to Materials, Processes and Technical Skills

  • An Integrated Approach to 2D Problem Solving

  • An Integrated Approach to 3D Problem Solving

  • Developing an Art and Design Project

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs (grades A*-C), including English, maths and an art and design subject, or satisfactory results in a relevant Level 2 qualification, and an interview with a portfolio of artwork.



Career Opportunities

Upon the successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to progress on to employment in the creative industries at technician level. You will also have the opportunity to progress on to the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design which will offer subject specialist study.


Course Progression


The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design will prepare and guide you through the UCAS application process to progress to a degree course, such as the BA (Hons) Art and Design (3D Design and Craft/ Fine Art/ Fashion and Textiles/Graphic Design) or FdA/BA (Hons) Photography at Colchester Institute.

Our term starts the week commencing 5th September 2016,
however you may have different start dates depending on the course.
You will receive the details of your first day over the summer period,
