Literature has long been an inspiration for artists, particularly since academic painting privileged narrative subjects. By looking at how different artists have treated the same stories, we will explore the fascinating relationship between the written word and the image. Likewise, art has inspired literature (e.g. Hopper’s paintings have spawned many stories; not to mention novels such as The Girl with the Pearl Earring about Vermeer) so we will also look at the issues involved with translating the visual image into narrative.
