The artisan is the person who, with a domestic and traditional type of activity, centers on himself the functions inherent to the management and assumes all the burdens and risks, continuously producing objects and service goods endowed with artistic value, without either with the help of family members and strangers. A craftsman is an experienced worker who uses tools, machinery and raw materials for the production or transformation of certain artifacts (objects or foods). Before the industrial revolution, all production was entrusted to them. The firm headed by an artisan (owner or partner) is called an artisan firm (which may or may not be a company). In pre-Roman antiquity the legal status of the craftsmen was generally precarious, since they were valued at the same level as slaves, although the best managed to achieve a certain fame. In ancient Rome the condition of the artisans gradually improved until they were able to obtain the dignity of knight. In Constantinople, particular bonds were woven to provide for a continuity of profession in the family. In this historical period the imperial workshops approached the guilds in importance, and assumed a fundamental role in transmitting knowledge and men in all areas of the Empire. To become a craftsman in cooperatives, a person had to work as a young man under an experienced craftsman, as an unpaid apprentice. When they completed their training they became full-fledged workers and received pay.
