Specialisms With a wide range of specialisms to choose from, you can create a programme of study that is interdisciplinary and tailored to your specialist interests or skills. The specialisms that we offer on the Arts MA include: Arts and Festival Management. Education and the Arts. Dance. Drama. Performance. Photography. Video. The course also allows you to study in a way that suits your individual circumstances and your preferred learning style(s). Subject to prior approval, you can take up to 90 credits from our taught postgraduate provision, while the rest of the programme will be completed through negotiated learning contracts. Overview You can choose to study full-time or part-time. You can exit the programme with a postgraduate certificate having completed 60 credits or with a postgraduate diploma having completed 120 credits. The shortest period of study for the master’s award is one year full-time. As you can negotiate activities and assessment tasks within your learning contract, assessment can be as varied as you want it to be and can include practical work. All full-time and part-time students must complete a Research Methods module in Term 1. To achieve the master’s award, all students must undertake a Major Project, which could comprise practical and written work; a fully written Dissertation or a Work Placement at the end of your course. You will be assigned two dedicated mentors who will provide academic support throughout the course. They will also help you to establish learning contract. DMU academic and research staff are experts in their field. They are actively engaged in a wide range of professional activities including research, publishing, performing and exhibiting in both national and international contexts. Contact hours. On the Arts MA, your programme of study is determined by you as the student, as the programme seeks to build on and develop the capacity for self-directed, autonomous study. Full-time students will normally study independently for up to 35 hours a week, which will include meetings with your mentor and more intensive contact as you progress towards assessments within the allocated contact hours of your mentors. As part of your learning contract you may also take up to 90 credits of taught module options within this time, which will reduce the number of hours spent in independent study. Part-time study is normally undertaken on a half-time basis. Year one Term 1 (Full time and Part time) Research methods for Creative Arts Practice (core module in Term 1 for full time and part time). And choose from a range of option self-directed and/or taught modules: Arts assignment self directed modules. Research into Performance. Perspectives. Term 2 (Full time and Part time) Choose from a range of option self-directed and/or taught modules: Arts assignment self directed modules. Music Festivals. Animating Places. Cultural Policy and Planning. Negotiated Placement. Education and the Arts. Performance, Practice and Technology. Term 3 (Full time) Choose one of the following modules: Major Project: Dissertation. Major Project: Design Concept. Major Project: Practical Outcome and Context. Work Based Project/Placement.
