The arts and humanities address some of the most profound questions facing people today in a broad range of ways, across a multitude of different academic disciplines. This pathway has been carefully produced to introduce you to the exciting breadth and significance of the arts and humanities and to develop skills such as academic reading and writing, critical thinking, and communication. These skills are not only essential for undergraduate study, but also highly beneficial in the workplace.
This programme is designed for UK students whose school-leaving qualifications do not meet the current admissions requirements for direct entry to undergraduate programmes in the arts and humanities, and mature students holding non-standard qualifications.
The foundation year will equip you with the skills you need for a further three years of degree-level study (four years for language degrees, with year three spent abroad).
All students participate in the same Foundation Year and upon successful completion will progress to their chosen undergraduate degree or may be permitted to change to a different degree from the available options.

Course programme

All students take the same modules: Important Thinkers through History In every field of the arts and humanities there are significant people who have contributed to the intellectual and cultural development of humanity. In this module you’ll consider a selection of these ‘important thinkers’, drawn from different disciplines across the Faculty of Arts, across a broad sweep of history and representing a variety of cultural and geographical contexts. Critical Thinking and Reflective Learning This module will introduce you to key skills and practices for university work and help you make the transition from school, college or work to undergraduate study. Critical thinking and reflective learning are skills that are essential for thriving on your chosen degree course but they’re also important for developing thoughtful, responsible citizens who contribute effectively to society. Language and Culture Language and culture are both fundamental aspects of any arts and humanities degree. In this module you’ll develop an analytical and critical approach to English as well as an understanding of the potential challenges and benefits involved in studying other languages and cultures. Media and Visual Culture Narrative and Creativity The Project The modules we offer are inspired by the research interests of our staff and as a result may change for reasons of, for example, research developments or legislation changes. The above list is a sample of typical modules we offer, not a definitive list.
