AS/A2 Applied Science
AS/A2 Applied Science is a combined single A level studying all the sciences. It is ideal for students interested in a range of scientific matters and keen to explore their practical applications, particularly in industry and health care. Visits to local companies and institutions will demonstrate different aspects of biology, chemistry and physics in action. You will learn about different methods of analysing substances and functions. You will have a chance to consider different career options in science and specialise in areas of particular interest to you.

AS Course Content
The AS course comprises three units:
1. Investigating science at work
Visiting places like hospitals, micro-breweries, wind farms etc., you will describe the science they use, who works there and what their qualifications are. You will then study one organisation in detail.
Assessment: coursework
2. Finding out about substances
You will learn to use many different techniques to analyse and identify different chemical compounds and learn how these techniques can be used in areas like medical pathology and forensic science.
Assessment: coursework
3. Monitoring activity of the human body
You will study the lungs and heart, focusing particularly on how different measurements are made on these organs and what they tell us. You will also study different methods of imaging the body, like X-rays and ultrasound.

Assessment: examination

A2 Course Content
The A2 course comprises a further three units:
3. Investigating the scientist's work
You will have an opportunity to work as a research scientist and to use the knowledge and skills that you have developed in previous work to complete an extended investigation into a topic.
Assessment: portfolio
4. Ecology and managing the environment
You will develop an understanding of the relationships between the biological and physical components of ecosystems and research how these are affected by change, including the need for humans to maintain species diversity.
Assessment: portfolio
5. Working waves
Waves have always been vital tools in communication. You will be able to understand the principals involved in the use of waves for a variety of purposes in the modern world.
Assessment: examination

Is Applied Science for you?
You will enjoy and benefit from Applied Science if you:
  • have followed a dual award GCSE Science and would prefer not to specialise;
  • have an interest in a range of scientific matters and are keen to explore their practical applications;
  • would like to see science in action while visiting local companies and institutions;
  • would prefer to be assessed by coursework rather than by examination.

Applied Science and your future
You could go on to university to study science: many universities have courses to enable students with a wide range of qualifications to take up science. Some would allow immediate entry to their degrees.

If you do not wish to go to university but wish to seek employment in a scientific laboratory, this would be a appropriate course.
