WHY TAKE BIOLOGY?
Have you ever thought about the following issues: stopping global warming, finding cures for diseases, feeding the starving and cloning animals?
If so, Biology is the subject for you. Biology is the science of life and looks at the ways organisms function and interact. Biology is a dynamic area which can touch everyone through medical science and scientific developments such as curing genetic diseases, developing drugs, fertility treatments and new foods.
WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
In the AS course you will study Biology and Disease and The Variety of Living Organisms. For A2 you will study Populations and Environment and Control in Cells and in Organisms.
WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will have the opportunity to develop skills in communication by working independently and with others through practical investigations, problem-solving, model-making and discussions. You will also develop your analytical and maths skills. You should be prepared to work hard. The skills you develop could give you a wide range of career opportunities from medicine, environmental health, pharmacy, sports science, animal health and psychology to teaching and television, management and marketing.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will take three units for the AS and three further units to complete the A2. Two units in each year are solely assessed by examination and the third is based on a practical investigation. Your progress will also be monitored through regular homework exercises, quizzes and progress tests.
PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Students are given the opportunity to study Biology in a wider context through field trips and day trips which may include visits to museums, revision conferences, lectures and university workshops. Do you have a competitive streak? We also enter a team for inter-college competitions such as the Institute of Biology annual quiz.
