What will I study?
Chemistry studies the reactions underlying many of our most important industries such as oil, plastics and pharmaceuticals. A knowledge of Chemistry helps in the understanding of crucial problems affecting society including environmental and energy issues. Chemistry divides roughly into the following areas: Physical Chemistry which explains the behaviour of substances by linking their structures to considerations of energy and speed of reaction. Inorganic Chemistry which looks at the patterns in reactions of elements and how these depend on the structures of their atoms. Organic Chemistry which studies the chemistry of carbon which forms more compounds than all the other elements put together. In the How Science Works aspect, topics are linked to real life which ensures relevance to contemporary issues. Chemistry is linked with Physics through Physical Chemistry and with Biology through Biochemistry. There are also strong links with Environmental Science, Geology, Geography, Food and Nutritional Science, Design and Technology and Mathematics.
