What will I study?

This course encourages you to develop your interest in both the linguistic and literary study of English by studying a range of literary and non-literary texts. There are four units comprising the two year course.
  • At AS

  • Unit 1: Introducing Analysis and Production Understanding how texts are constructed for certain audiences and purposes. Introduction to the necessary skills to effectively analyse texts. Analysis of the themes, style, structure, characterisation and literary features of two modern novels. Creative writing in response to a number of tasks related to one of the novels studied.
    Unit 2: Analysing Speech and its Representation conversation, scripted speech, dialogue in novels and in play scripts. The dynamics and features of spoken language in the real world. The various ways in which writers represent this in fiction.
  • At A2

Unit 3: Exploring Comparison and Production Developing the skills to effectively compare the different features and effects of fiction and non-fiction texts. Creatively re-shaping an extract from a set modern text to suit a new audience and purpose.
Unit 4: Developing Comparison Students choose two texts from a selection of works of modern and pre-twentieth century poetry or novels to form the basis of an extended comparative essay on a theme of their own choosing.

How is this course assessed?

Unit one and two: 1 hour 30 mins examination.
Unit three: 2 hours 30 mins examination.
Unit four: coursework essay.

What next?

English Language and Literature is an excellent qualification for progressing on to courses and careers in journalism and other forms of professional writing, teaching and research. It also combines very effectively with all other academic disciplines as it develops reading, writing, personal expression, critical thinking and analytical skills.
