Beginner in British Sign Language (BSL)

This course is for people who have no knowledge of sign language. It will give you a basic knowledge of how to communicate in different ways with deaf people and give you the confidence to enrol for the Level 1 course.

This course is for people who have no knowledge of sign language.

It covers very basic signs like:

• Asking people’s name, finger spelling names
• Members of the family, mum, dad, grandma etc
• Weather
• Numbers
• Transport
• Work
• Some Communication Tactics
• Use of BSL/English interpreters

The course is run over 7 weeks, course times vary to cover daytime and evenings, and we try to cover everyone’s requirements where possible.

• The sessions are relaxed and informal with a coffee/tea break half-way through
• It is a very basic course and taught in a way that ensures all students are fully included and able to access all information
• At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance for this course

The BSL Taster Course will enable you to

• Have the confidence to enrol for the Level 1 course
• See the different careers available to you working within the Deaf community, as your signing skills improve from Level 1 up to the qualified interpreter degree
• Have basic knowledge of how to communicate in different ways with deaf people
