About this course
Five Grade Cs at GCSE in appropriate subjects including Maths or English. You will need to achieve at least a Grade B in German at GCSE.

Modern Languages provide enjoyable and useful lifelong skills. Whether used at work or for leisure purposes, they open up new avenues of communication and encourage a broader cultural understanding. Almost all teaching will be in German, and we offer a Bridging the Gap programme during the first half term.To improve your listening speaking skills, you will have regular access to interactive on-line resources and weekly contact with a foreign language assistant. Students also have the opportunity to take part in work experience in Germany.
AS Course Content
There are four topics:
Media: TV advertising and communication technology
Popular Culture: cinema, music and fashion/ trends
Healthy Living / Lifestyle: sport / exercise, health and well-being and holidays
Family / Relationships: relationships within the family, friendships and marriage / partners
Assessment:
Unit 1: listening, reading and writing - 2 hour examination (70%)
Unit 2: speaking - 35-minute test (including 20 minutes' preparation time) (30%)
A2 Course Content
There are four further topics:
The environment: pollution, energy and protecting the planet
The multicultural society: immigration, integration and racism
Contemporary social issues: wealth and poverty, law and order and the impact of scientific and technological progress
Two cultural topics: the study of a German-speaking region or community and a dramatist from a German-speaking country.
Assessment:
Unit 3: listening, reading and writing 2½ hour written examination (70%)
Unit 4: a 35 minute speaking test (including 20 minutes' preparation time) (30%).
Is German for you?
You will enjoy and benefit from German if you:
have shown an aptitude for languages at GCSE or in previous studies;
are interested in how languages work;
are confident about expressing your views, both orally and on paper;
are interested in current affairs and future issues, both within Europe and the wider world.
German and your future
German can lead to variety of careers both in this country and abroad. International companies welcome language graduates and there is the possibility of working within the European Community.
