Course programme

FM1 - Understanding Film Form In this internally assessed (coursework) unit, you will study the 'building blocks' of film language (such as performance, editing, & sound) to develop an understanding of how these elements combine to create meaning and emotional response for the audience. FM2 - British & American Film In this externally assessed (exam) unit you will look at how we can gain a greater understanding of film content by considering; (a) their production contexts, (b) the time & place in which they were produced, & (c) their relationship to other similar films. FM3 - Film Research & Creative Projects In this internally assessed (coursework) unit, you undertake an individual research project, investigating the work of a chosen film-maker, actor or institution. You will also create a short film, that will demonstrate your understanding and control of distinct stylistic techniques used in film-making. FM4 - Varieties of Film Experience Issues and Debates In this externally assessed (exam) unit you will learn about selected international film movements, and consider the impact of cultural context on film content. You will also consider the ways in which popular film creates an emotional response, through a study of 'Shocking Cinema'. You will also study a selected 'close study' film. This course will allow you to develop various skills highly valued by both universities and potential employers, including: Critical observation and analysis. Practical film-making, including cinematography & effects, sound production, and non-linear digital editing (using industry standard software). The course is entirely delivered at Park Lane Campus. Taught classes will take place in designated, suitably equipped rooms, and for practical work, students will have access to adjacent studio facilities (for interior filming), and a Mac-based editing suite equipped with industry standard editing software. Other production equipment, such as cameras & tripods, lighting rigs and sound-recording equipment will also be supplied by the college. The full A-Level qualification is recognised by all universities and higher education institutions, and is accorded full quota of UCAS points (required for most university entrants). The majority of our students progress on to a range of HE courses. Many go on to study degrees in 'Film & Television Production' or 'Film/Media Studies', but our students have also progressed to a range of other courses including Journalism, American Studies, Art, Textiles, Law, Business & Marketing. This course does also develop a range of skills and abilities highly valued by employers (as detailed above), and some students have progressed directly to employment in a variety of sectors. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.
