What will I study?
You will study the 'micro elements' of a film in the AS year, such as camera work, lighting, performance, cinematography, editing and sound. You will identify how these 'micro elements' construct meaning and emotion, reflect on your individual response to these elements, and create a storyboard sequence to demonstrate how these features create meaning. You will also examine the relationship between producers and audiences and the role of genre and narrative in constructing meaning in British and American films.

In the second year, you will produce a small-scale research project which will develop your research techniques and a creative screenwriting project. The remainder of this year will focus on studying more complex films from different contexts. You will apply key concepts and critical approaches gained throughout the course to extend your knowledge of the diversity of film and its effects on audiences.

How is this course assessed?
The AS course is assessed by an analysis of how the 'micro elements' of an extract from a film of your choice produces meanings and responses (1500 words) and a storyboard based on a film sequence. This constitutes 40% of the AS, with 60% being a two and a half hour written exam on British and American film.

The A2 is assessed by a small-scale research project and creative work based around screenwriting. This constitutes 25% of the full A level, the remainder being a two and three-quarter hour written paper on issues and debates within Film Studies.

What next?
Film Studies can lead to a range of possible higher education courses and future careers. It also combines very effectively with all other academic disciplines as it develops writing skills, personal response, critical thinking and analytical skills. You should be aware, however, that Film Studies is an academic, rather than a practical, study of film.
