WHY TAKE MEDIA?
A level Media Studies is a course for students with a strong curiosity about all aspects of the media, from old media forms like newspapers and films to new media forms like videogames and the internet. Media Studies combines well with a range of other A-level subjects such as Art and Design, ICT, English and Sociology. Particularly interested students may consider taking Media Studies alongside Film Studies.
WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
In the first year, you will study; Foundation Production. In this part of the course you will study the techniques of media production. Working in a team, you will research, plan and produce your own short film sequence. You will then move on to study Key Media Concepts. In this part of the course you will study the different ways of analysing the media. A close study of British Television Drama programmes such as Dr. Who and Hollyoaks will focus on exploring how media texts communicate meanings about gender, ethnicity, and social class. A close study of a media industry such as the newspaper industry will explore how media institutions are adapting to the new digital environment. In the second year you will undertake another extended production task, and you will develop your understanding of certain critical perspectives relating to the media.
WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
The subject has a practical side as well as a theoretical academic side. You will learn the technical terms needed to analyse media texts in a systematic way, but you will also learn the skills involved in producing media texts using professional equipment. At Priestley, the emphasis is on using video cameras and editing software to produce work in film and television. Nothing in the media is produced by individuals working alone, so you will need to be able to collaborate with other students working in groups over an extended period.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
50% coursework (practical production). 50% examination.
