What will I study?

  • AS: Unit 1 Influences on Music: this is a study of the Western Classical Tradition and also of Choral Music in the Baroque Period. Unit 2 Composing: Creating Musical Ideas: you will study compositional techniques, free composition or pastiche, and how to arrange music; you will choose one of these areas for submitting for assessment.

    Unit 3 Interpreting musical Ideas: you will choose two performances of solo and ensemble music (each 5-8 minutes) from a choice of six (including opportunities for using music technology).

How is this course assessed?

  • AS Unit 1 is a written paper (1 hour 45 mins) with structured listening questions using a CD of musical excerpts, followed by two essay questions: 80 marks (30% of total AS; 15% of total A2)Unit 2 is externally assessed: 60 marks (30% of total AS; 15% of total A2).


  • A2 Unit 3 is internally assessed: 80 marks (40% of total AS; 20% of total A2). Unit 4 is a written exam, 20% of A-level Unit 5 is a composition, 15% of A-level Unit 6 is externally assessed, 15% of A-level
