AS/A2 Performance Studies
AS/A2

Performance Studies explores the relationship between Dance, Drama and Music. You will need to have an interest in all three and, as an entry requirement, strong technical skills in at least two. The work you do will develop your knowledge, understanding and analysis of performance repertoire, genres and practitioners. You will develop performance skills in all three discrete areas, learning to make creative links between the art forms. You will learn about the performance process of improvising, rehearsing and performing in order to create your own performance material and study the relationship between performer and audience. Although there is a strong focus on practical work, there is also a substantial written element.

AS Course Content
1. Creating Performance

You will attend skills-based workshops in the individual art forms leading to three short performance pieces. You will also devise and perform a longer piece which combines the three art forms and has a community focus.
Assessment will be based on two elements: a written commentary on the practical work as a whole and the performance of the community piece.
2. Performance Contexts
You will study the work of three practitioners, one in each art form.
Assessment: two-hour written examination

A2 Course Content
3. Performance Contexts: Politics and Performance since 1914

You will consider the relationship between performance and politics in works created since the start of World War One. You will study a range of nine extracts: three in Dance, three in Drama and three in Music.
Assessment: two-hour written examination
4. Performance Project
You are required to undertake two performance assessments:

a performance realisation of one of the works from the repertoire you have studied

a student-devised performance produced in response to a commission chosen from a selection set by the exam board.

Assessment: both performances are assessed by a visiting examiner
