Course programme
Engage in the practice and theories of music, encounter a variety of styles and approaches, and choose your own specialisms from performance, composition, music technology and education. You’ll also have the chance to experience live performance, from solo work to large-scale orchestral and choral productions.
Through our blend of theory and practice, and a focus on ‘learning by doing’, you’ll experience a diverse range of music and will consider a range of critical approaches to understanding it. Our emphasis on issue-based modules will allow you to explore the broader context of music, its relationship to other art forms and disciplines and to wider society, rather than just studying by historical period or geographical location.
Our Music Performance Studies modules include individual instrumental or vocal tuition from visiting tutors of international repute. These lessons will support your work on the course and help you to progress as a practising musician or vocalist. You’ll also develop your performing skills through weekly performance workshops, where you’ll receive regular feedback from staff on your progress.
On campus, you can enjoy our weekly lunchtime concerts given by professional musicians, while you’ll also have opportunities to perform in a wide variety of venues across Cambridge and beyond. Pending audition, you’ll even have the chance to join the University of Cambridge’s Musical Society and the Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra, or one of the many Cambridge chapel choirs and college orchestras.
