Socrates warned that: "The unexamined life is not worth living", at Cardinal Newman we will encourage you to explore your own beliefs, values and ideas while achieving high grades and good progression.
What is Philosophy?
Philosophy literally means the 'love of wisdom'. Generally speaking it is the careful and critical study of every aspect of human life. So we find that there is a philosophy of religion, a philosophy of science and art and so on. Down the ages many great thinkers have devoted themselves to the study of philosophy and the examination of their writings is a large part of what we mean by philosophy today.
Will I enjoy Philosophy?
The course is wide ranging and covers both ideas that will stretch your imagination and those that will challenge you to think about your everyday life. The subjects we cover lend themselves to fascinating discussions and you will be encouraged to participate in debates around the topics we cover. If you enjoy thinking about and discussing new and challenging ideas then this could really be the course for you.
What exactly will I study?
The topics covered during the first year are:

· Where does my knowledge come from? Does it come from the experiences I receive through my senses or are there other sources of knowledge?

· How accurately do I perceive the world around me? Do my senses give me correct information about how the world really is or do I just see the world as it seems to be?

· How tolerant should be with one another? When, if at all, should we prevent people from performing actions or saying things that may offend or harm others?

· What is a person? Do persons have qualities distinct from other living things? Are all humans persons? Could a complex computer or a gorilla be a person and thus have rights and status equal to humans?

· What do we mean by God? Thinkers have described God as possessing attributes such as omnipotence (all powerful) but what does omnipotence mean? Could God create a stone so heavy that He could not lift it? Would that challenge his omnipotence?

The topics studied in the second year are:

· The philosophy of mind
· Political philosophy
· A study of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato and his book, The Republic
Progression
Students use Philosophy to enter a broad range of degree courses in higher education. These have included History, Philosophy, Sociology, Theology, Law, Politics and Mathematics. Combined degrees, linking Philosophy with other subjects, are increasingly popular.

Studies in Philosophy have led students into opportunities in teaching, publishing, welfare services, the Church, politics, the civil service, management and accountancy. Good employers want people who can think, listen intelligently, analyse and offer a well considered argument.
