Physics is the study of the world of matter and energy and is a key part of Science and Technology. It seeks to explain everything from the interior of the atom up to the largest galaxies in the universe, and involves both living and non-living things. This course will enable you to understand some of the main ideas and methods of Physics, and learn to apply your knowledge to solve problems.

Useful Subject Combinations You may choose to do Physics in combination with other Science subjects or as a complementary qualification to an Arts or Humanities programme. The combination of Physics and Maths is highly recommended particularly if you intend to pursue Physics to A2. If you do not take this combination, you will be advised to take a supplementary course (not examined) in Maths for Science.
What will I study?

How is this course assessed?
The course consists of three modules for AS and a further three for the full A2 level qualification
- AS STUDIES: Three units each assessed by examination. Unit 1 Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity (1 hour 15 minutes) Unit 2 Mechanics, Materials and Waves (1 hour 15 minutes) Unit 3 Practical Skills Verification (PSV Teacher assessed throughout the year) and Externally Marked Practical Examination (EMPA) Unit 1 and 2 examinations available in January and June, Unit 3 June only.
- A2 STUDIES: Three units each assessed by examination. Unit 4 Fields and Further Mechanics (1 hour 45 minutes) Unit 5 Nuclear, Thermal Physics and Astrophysics (1 hour 45 minutes) Unit 6 PSV and EMPA Unit 4 examination available in January and June, Unit 5 and Unit 6 June only.
What next?
A knowledge of physics is an essential requirement for many courses and areas of employment, and an A level in physics could lead to careers in any of the following fields and many more: Engineering, Medicine and Medical Physics, Industry (chemistry, electronics, aerospace, food), Meteorology, Computing, Material Science Scientific Civil Service (research, patents, defence), Communications. Environmental Physics (radiation, pollution control), Education, and Geophysics (mining, oil prospecting).
