This course is designed to provide those with responsibilities for maintaining a property, or in control of a building with an understanding of the health risks posed by asbestos and the process of identifying, assessing and managing asbestos containing materials on their premises. The course is presented by a professional occupational hygienist with many years experience of asbestos in buildings. Suitable for: Any person with responsibility for maintaining and repairing all or part of a property, or who has control of a building, health and safety officers, facilities or property managers, building surveyors, landlords and anyone with an interest in safe working in the built environment.

Asbestos - Safe Management

Around 4,000 people a year in the UK die from diseases caused by exposure to asbestos and this may rise to nearer 15,000 by 2010. Those involved with refurbishment, repair or maintenance of buildings are particularly at risk.

If you own, occupy, manage or have responsibilities for premises, which may contain asbestos, you will either have:

  • A legal duty to manage the risk from asbestos materials; or
  • A duty to co-operate with whoever manages that risk.
Course Objectives:

This course is designed to provide those with responsibilities for maintaining a property, or in control of a building with an understanding of the health risks posed by asbestos and the process of identifying, assessing and managing asbestos containing materials on their premises. The course is presented by a professional occupational hygienist with many years experience of asbestos in buildings

Course Outline:

The course is highly interactive and includes video and demonstration of a range of actual asbestos materials (safely contained!) collected from various buildings. The course is summarise as follows:

  • The nature of asbestos, sources, types and uses
  • Typical uses of asbestos in construction materials
  • Asbestos related health effects and diseases
  • Legislative framework
  • Asbestos exposure limits
  • Asbestos surveys
  • Asbestos management (including risk assessment)
  • Safe working procedures
