Description
An assertive person is confident, communicates well, has good interpersonal skills, feels in control, and is skilled in dealing with people in all types of situations. These attributes do not always come easy to each of us, and we sometimes need help to become more assertive. This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to acknowledge and build on their existing skills, identify areas for growth, and practice some well tested and proven techniques.

Course objectives/key benefits:
On completion delegates will have:
· A greater understanding of the principles of assertiveness
· Increased their confidence in handling difficult situations
· Increased their repertoire of assertive communication and skills
Who the course is aimed at:
All employers, employees and private individuals who feel that their work, company or lifestyle would benefit if they were more assertive and confident in everyday situations.
Course content:
Delegates will focus on specific situations they need to influence, yet find awkward to handle. This will form the basis of the workshop and candidates will have the opportunity to develop effective strategies to deal with them. Key areas include:
· Principles of assertiveness
· Differentiating between assertive, non assertive and aggressive behaviour
· Positive language, written and verbal
· How to manage the negative emotions which can lead to non assertive or aggressive behaviour. eg anxiety, apprehension and fear
· Thoughts - our inner dialogue and how they influence behaviour
· Making and refusing requests without manipulating or feeling guilty
· Dealing with criticism, conflict, confrontation and awkward situations
· Setting realistic goals for change

Workshop - questionnaires, partner and group exercise, demonstrations and practice, discussion and evaluation.
