Session 1 - Afternoon: Brief introduction to Ayurveda followed by some explanation of Marma points and basic Ayurvedic massage techniques.

Marma massage is a traditional Ayurvedic massage for stimulating vital points. This is a traditional Ayurvedic massage using herb infused ayurvedic oils, performed by the therapist using his hands, applying appropriate pressure to specific vital points/parts of the body. Marma abhyanga not only relieves back pain, stiffness and sports injuries but also stimulates various bodily organs and systems. Can take between 45-90 minutes.

Session 2 - Morning: Overview/demonstration of the Ayurvedic relaxation Massage which may be added to a trained massage therapists repertoire of techniques and advertised as such (Relaxation massage or Marma therapy massage). Practice of techniques by the participants.

Lunch: at a local café or bring your own; discussion on points covered so far.

Session 3 - Afternoon: Demonstration of other simple procedures which can be added into your practice including a basic knowledge of lepas (topical applications), as well as kati basti (for lower back), janu basti (knee problems) and greeva basti (spondilosis, neck problems). The individual prescriptions for lepas and bastis may vary from client to client and have to be prescribed by a fully qualified Ayurvedic medical practitioner.

  • Kati Basti for lower back pain, chronic and acute backaches, Prolapsed disc, Lumbar Spondylosis, Osteoporosis, Sciatica. ,A special technique aimed at providing relief to the lower back using warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions when bathing the lower back for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Janu Basti for knee/ joint pain; In this treatment the knee is bathed in warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions, taking 20 to 30 minutes. It promotes the strength of the knee joint by improving the circulation.
  • Greeva Basti for neck pain/ discomfort, Cervical Spondylosis, Chronic pain in the neck region, Compression fractures. Bathing the back of the neck using warm medicated oil or herbal decoction for 20 to 30 minutes.

Normally clients would attend a course of at least 3 daily treatment sessions, but more usually 5 -7 sessions to give best results. Usually a short massage would be performed before the Basti treatment.

After training you are able to add these therapies to your professional practise. For best results clients may receive their personalised herbal prescription from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
