Course programme

Course Content

Studies in economics currently include business and financial forecasting, econometrics, economics of growth and development, economics of money and banking, economics of the European Monetary Union, international business and global change, and international economics. In mathematics you can choose from a range of option units covering topics including digital applications, differential equations and dynamical systems. You will also complete a final year project or dissertation. If you take equal study you can choose to do this unit in either economics or mathematics. If you are taking a major or named route, this unit will come from the relevant subject.

  • Year 1

    In Year 1, you will study both subjects equally (2 units from each subject).

    The Economics units are:

    • Introduction to Macroeconomic Principles
    • Introduction to Microeconomic Principles

    The Mathematics units are:

    • Linear Algebra and Programming Skills
    • Mathematics Fundamentals
  • Year 2

    In Year 2, you can continue with equal study (2 units from each subject) or choose a major/minor route (3 units from one subject, 1 unit from the other subject). You must study one core unit from each subject.

    The Economics units are:

    • Principles of Economic Theory (core)
    • Current Issues in Economics (PDP)
    • Quantitative Analysis in Economics and Business
    • Schools of Political Economy
    • Economics of Corporate Finance
    • Quantitative Techniques

    The Mathematics units are:

    • Mathematical Methods (core)
    • Mathematics of Computer Graphics and Virtual Environments
    • Number Theory and Cryptography
    • Numerical Methods and Modelling
  • Year 3

    In your final year you can continue with an equal study or major/minor route. A further option in the final year is named route study. If you have chosen a major/minor route in Year 2, then you could choose to focus solely on your major subject in your final year, leading to a BA (Hons) Economics or BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree.
