Course programme

Economists are involved in the most fundamental decisions in the areas of health, education, transport, environment, criminal justice, planning and finance. Their skills are needed in all sectors of industry as well as by international non- and quasi- governmental agencies. The international applicability of the economist's training is a particular feature of the degree exemplified by the range of optional modules in the fields of development economics and multinational corporate enterprise. In addition, the subject has a rich intellectual heritage that appeals to those of a reflective nature confronting, as it does, issues such as wealth and poverty, equity, efficiency and social justice.

You will develop communication, behavioural and analytical skills through seminar activities. This may include presenting papers, discussing previously distributed papers, group work on case studies or the use of information technology for problem-solving.

The BSc(Hons) Economics stream of the single honours programme has a common theme throughout the course, that of economic modelling and the econometric aspects of economic analysis. The application of economic data to specific economic models and the critical analysis of the results obtained from these models, particularly in the area of forecasting. Optional modules include the areas of economic history, international economics and business economics.

Assessment:

Students are assessed through a mixture of coursework, oral presentation and written examination (the balance varies between modules but coursework always accounts for at least 50 per cent of the final mark).

Learning Environment:

Throughout the three years of the full-time course learning takes place in a variety of forums including formal lectures and more informal seminars and tutorials in which group working as well as individual presentations are utilised.

Careers:

A degree in Economics opens up a wide variety of career options. Further study can be undertaken to Masters and Doctorate level. Economists are in demand by industry, commerce, education and both local and national government. In many sectors there is a chronic shortage of economists, with a consequent escalation in salaries.

Other Opportunities:

As the single honours Economics degree programme consists of three streams, all with a common first year, it is possible to transfer to one of the other streams (BA(Hons) Economics or BA(Hons) Business Economics) upon successful completion of the first year.
