Course programme
Year 1
The first year introduces you to the study of crime, criminal behaviour, psychology and the criminal justice system. You will study modules on
- theories of crime and offending behaviour
- introduction to psychology
- understanding the criminal justice process
- the reporting and recording of crime and victimisation
- social research methods
- key skills in studying social sciences
Year 2
- In the second year, you will take core modules on:
- abnormal and applied biological psychology
- biological psychology, personality and individual differences
- analysing social data: a critical toolkit
- social and developmental psychology
You can also choose form a range of optional modules including:
- dangerousness, offenders and public protection
- crime, politics and victimisation
- punishment and society
- criminal evidence and investigation
Year 3
In the final year, you write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice (with specialist supervision) and take a core module on forensic psychology. Alongside these, you take optional modules including:

- evil
- crime and media
- surveillance and social control
- experimental criminology
- contemporary imprisonment
- histories of punishment
- desistance from crime
- green criminology
- understanding terrorism
- peacemaking criminology
- experimental criminology
In the final year, you can also choose to take a placement module with Humberside Police where you observe the day-to-day activities involved in a range of police roles.
