Course programme

Course Content

In Year 1, the Energy and Environmental Systems module overviews conventional energy and renewable energy system components, performance and impacts. Modules focusing on the fundamentals of physics, chemistry, mathematics, sustainability, design, implementation & installation, planning and environmental impacts provide science, engineering and broader social and environmental contexts for conventional energy and renewable energy systems performance analysis.

To help with your transition to University learning you will undertake a week long induction program and given your own study advisor. You will be able to develop your study skills through specially designed sessions run by senior students in the course.

In Year 2, the current most prominent renewable energy technologies (wind, solar and biomass) are delivered in individual modules underpinned by analysis of conventional and renewable technologies through thermodynamics, heat transfer, electrical system design and sizing, electricity networks and mathematics. The curriculum is strongly linked to the internationally recognised research portfolio of the Centre of Sustainable Technologies .

In preparation for placement (Year 3), you will develop your application skills and employability. You will have the opportunity to visit relevant professional organisations, see installations of renewable energy systems and attend lectures delivered by recognised experts of the Energy industry.

In Year 3, Industrial Placement is an integral part of the course. This year enhances the awareness of energy systems and their deployment, techno-economic assessment, environmental impact, design, the need to attend to health and safety matters, and the essential need to consider the ‘prudent use of natural resources’. Benefits include access to working with other professionals in the design environment, teamwork in activities such as Design, Installation, and Survey are normally accrued in this year.

In Year 4, Energy Economics, Energy Management, Energy Storage and Social & End User Behaviour modules are underpinned by Project Management and a Research Dissertation utilising the extensive laboratories of the Centre for Sustainable Technologies. Nuclear Energy, Clean Fossil Fuels, Energy from Hydrogen, Energy from Water and Green Buildings offer a range of options to focus career choices.

You will have the opportunity to develop your critical evaluation and independent thinking skills by participating in international collaborative research projects run by the Centre of Sustainable Technologies
