Course programme
The staff use a variety of teaching methods, teaching in lectures and in small seminar groups to provide opportunities for interactive learning and active engagement. English modules feature equally with History of Art choices.
In the first year you will take the following modules: Introduction to Literary Studies, Introduction to Renaissance Literature and English Landmark Texts, and Art and the City plus an additional English module to total 80 credits.
Modules from History of Art are worth 40 credits per year, including a year-long module in the first year introducing you to the practice of art history - and archaeology. You will examine five cities at key moments in history: classical Athens, ancient Rome, medieval York, Renaissance Florence and High Renaissance Rome.
Other modules introduce artistic techniques and examine functions of art and artistic reputation. In the second year you will explore the intriguing relationship between art and society in Baroque Rome, 17th-century Amsterdam, 18th-century London, the Paris of the Impressionists, and 20th-century New York. You can also focus on the High Renaissance, Venetian Renaissance art, 19th-century French art and modern art, while there is a special subject on the Pre-Raphaelites.
In your final year you will have the opportunity to undertake a research-based dissertation on a related topic of your choice.
