Who is the course for?
A single year re-take GCSE course in English Language designed to develop and improve your current grade and reading/writing/
speaking and listening skills.
This course is designed primarily for students who have studied at Key Stage 4 and have achieved a grade D.
Content outline
This course is aimed at providing students with a new opportunity to improve and develop their communication skills (writing/reading/speaking and listening). Students will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts both pre- and post-1900. They will write for different audiences and purposes as well as continuing to develop their speaking and listening skills.
This course comprises: one folder of coursework which can be assessed for both Language and Literature components; one written examination paper for Literature and two written papers for Language.
Coursework folder (20% for Language; 30% for Literature)
The folder consists of 5 written pieces:
1. Personal writing - fiction
2. Personal writing - non-fiction
3. Shakespeare text
4. Pre-1900 prose text
5. Post-1900 poetry
Speaking and Listening activities (20%)
A variety of interesting and challenging speaking and listening activities will be set throughout the year.
English Language written papers (60%)
Two written papers based on pre-release materials covering media texts, non-fiction texts and texts from other cultures and traditions.
English Literature written paper (70%)
One paper exploring understanding and individual responses to drama, prose and poetry texts.
Method of assessment
This course comprises: one folder of coursework which can be assessed for both Language and Literature components; one written examination paper for Literature and two written papers for Language.
