This innovative, interdisciplinary programme provides you with a detailed understanding of English literature, while equipping you with knowledge of the history, theory and practice of law, especially law in literature. Our English programmes enable you to pursue your own particular interests, with a vast range of modules covering linguistics, modern languages, philosophy and creative writing. The latter is enhanced by The Philip Larkin Centre for Poetry and Creative Writing, which attracts internationally-renowned visiting authors.

Course programme

Course Content

Our staff use a variety of teaching methods, teaching in lectures and in small seminar groups to provide opportunities for interactive learning and active engagement. English modules feature equally with Law choices.

In the first year of the programme you will take five core modules: Introduction to Literary Studies, Medieval English, Renaissance Literature, Modernist Fiction in English, and Legal Skills in Law, with the option of taking Criminal Law as a 'free elective'.

In the second and third years of the course, core modules are Legal Systems, Jurisprudence in Law and the team-taught Law and Literature module. You will have a much greater choice of options modules.

In your third year, you will study Evidence and the Criminal Trial, and undertake a dissertation in Literature and Law. You will be assessed by a variety of methods: exams, essays, presentations, reports and dissertations.
