Course programme

Course Content

In Year 1 you study ecology and biogeography; environment and society; describing the environment; the environmental skills toolbox; how the earth works; and marine systems.

In Year 2 core subjects are rivers and lakes; soils and vegetation; coastal and marine processes; and research methods with the field school, a week of intensive field study abroad. You can select additional modules from atmospheric and oceanic systems; an introduction to remote sensing and geographical information systems; environmental planning; development, environment and society; and landforms and landscapes.You can elect for enterprise, business and employability, a module designed for environmental subjects.

In the final year you undertake a research dissertation and a synoptic environmental module. You can choose from additional modules in natural and environmental hazards; quaternary environmental change; coastal environments; advanced geographical information systems; seafloor mapping; environmental toxicology; ecosystem and landscape conservation; rivers and lakes; and environment and international development.

The four-year degree programme enables you to undertake a year's work experience (in Year 3) leading to the award of the Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP). Alternatively you can also study in Europe or in the USA through the Business Education Initiative (BEI) leading to the award of the Diploma in International Academic Studies (DIAS). You return to the University for the final year of academic study.

Studying Education as a minor

The minor has 6 modules and you will take two modules each year over your three-year degree programme. You take four compulsory modules and select two options. The modules, with a brief description of content, are as follows:

Compulsory modules

An Introduction to Education

Explores the nature and purpose of education with a particular focus on the education system in Northern Ireland.

Children, Young People and the Law

Deals with important legal concepts including the legal rights and responsibilities of pupils and young people.

Education Citizens in a Changing World

Considers the nature and potential of citizenship education taking account of young people’s own opinions, values, dispositions and possible future working environment.

ICT and Online Learning

Looks at the application of ICT in teaching and learning with a particular focus on working within a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Optional modules

Education and Conflict

Explores the complexity of the relationship between education and conflict including consideration of a ‘rights’ based approach to education and the implications for societies with conflict.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: Theory and Practice

Considers the theory of English Language teaching and practical skills for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Tutoring in Schools

Gives you an opportunity to gain work experience in an actual school.

Working with Children and Young People with Additional Educational Needs

Sensitises you to the learning needs of all children and young people regardless of their aptitude and ability; the study of relevant policy and legislation is included.
