The foundation year provides you with a firm grounding in scientific, intellectual and investigative skills, allowing you to develop a reflective and adaptive approach to study. After this year you will progress to the degree programme. Hull has a proud and distinguished tradition of marine and freshwater biology and our first head of department, Sir Alister Hardy, was chief zoologist on Captain Scotts ship, Discovery. During the course you benefit from free core field trips and subsidised trips within the UK, Mallorca, Brazil or diving in Cuba taking the low-cost Dive Training module.

Course programme
In the Foundation Year you will undertake core modules in: Foundation Biology Foundation Science Foundation Maths 1 Preparing for Learning in Higher Education. Two further optional modules are taken from a selection of: Foundation Physics Foundation Maths 2 Foundation Chemistry Foundation Computing Foundation Psychology or Foundation Geography. Success in the Foundation Year will enable you to progress to the BSc Marine and Freshwater Biology.
The degree begins by giving you a general biological background. However, in the first semester we will take you into the field with a residential marine ecology course, which allows you to experience a range of marine habitats and survey techniques. Theres the option to broaden your skills by taking the elective module in Dive Training which can be employed in the field courses available in your final year.
The final year includes a research project based in the field or laboratory and supervised by a member of academic staff. Theres also the opportunity to work with the research teams in the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS) and the Hull International Fisheries Institute (HIFI) or The Deep. Research topics range from fundamental physiological studies to impacts of pollution, species conservation and behavioural studies.
