This course aims to produce competent speech language therapists who are able to practise safely and effectively. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of communication and related disorders and their management, understanding the effect of communication impairment on the person and the social contexts. The course will develop reflective practitioners with effective interpersonal and clinical skills and the ability to work in trans-disciplinary teams in contexts across health, education and social care. Students will appreciate their role in contributing to knowledge and understanding of communication, its disorders and their management through the application of research to practice and with skills to engage in research.

Course programme
University based studies include a variety of subjects related to understanding the disorders encountered by speech and language therapists. The subjects studied include speech, voice and hearing sciences; linguistics and phonetics; developmental, cognitive and neuro-psychology, medical specialisms, normal and disordered language, developmental and acquired disorders of language and associated conditions; application of evidence based enquiry and research methods.
The modular degree is integrated and hierarchical within a recognised compulsory structure. The placement components throughout the three years are carefully structured to integrate with the University-based studies.
