Course programme
In each year of study of this four-year degree, you will take two-thirds of your modules in Spanish with the remaining third devoted to modules in Business. Language modules include practical language skills and a wide range of options relating to the culture and history of Spain. Business modules concentrate on the basic concepts and functions of a business, ethical and legal issues in business, aspects of strategic management and the international business environment.
In the first year, language modules are available at either beginners and improvers or advanced level. The first year is a 'qualifying' period that does not contribute towards your final degree result. The only requirement is that you complete and pass the modules taken during the year. All subsequent modules contribute to your final degree classification. In the second and fourth year, all students take the same language modules.
The third year of the degree is spent in Spain or a Spanish-speaking country and comprises at least eight months spent abroad. You will notice a dramatic improvement in your spoken Spanish, giving you greater confidence and more mature insights into the country. Students can choose to study at an exchange partner university, work in a school as a language assistant or work in industry or commerce.
All our language degrees offer the opportunity to add a new language as a 20-credit free elective module throughout your degree study. The Department of Modern Languages offers the largest free elective programme in the University with 10 languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish) ranging from absolute beginners to post-A level standard.
