Is it for me?
This is a one-year course aimed at those students who want to top up a Foundation Degree or an HND to BA (Hons) level. The course offers modules in Recording, Performing and Working in the Music Industry
What do I need?
Foundation Degree / HND or equivalent
What will I study?
There are tutor-led workshops in performance and ensemble skills, leading to public performance. The Individual Project module is normally used by students to create and promote their own album, though other projects can be undertaken, such as creating a instrumental tuition book or a dissertation.
Other modules include Working in Music, which is based around a series of guest lectures, delivered by prominent figures from the industry, and a collaborative business plan leading to a major performance event. This module also offers an industry placement.
In addition to the above there is a module in Music Facilitation which encompasses skill and experiences leading to work in teaching and workshops or masterclasses.
Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.
As well as being a full time student of Gateshead College you are offered full access to all of the facilities at Northumbria University, including the 24 hour library.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is based on coursework. An ePortfolio, in the form of a website, is the means by which your work is recorded.
How will I be taught?
There are formal meetings and tutorials, as well as lectures and guest speakers. More practical tuition takes the form of ensembles and workshops. There are many opportunities for feedback and discussion with your tutor and you will be encouraged to develop your independent learning and production.
What qualification will I get?
BA (Hons) Contemporary Popular Music. This is a full Bachelor of Arts Honours degree and will entitle you to use the letters 'BA' after your name.
Can I go on to further study?
As with all awards of this kind you will be entitled to apply for progression into other higher education awards such a Masters degrees (MA) or doctorate (PhD).
What are the career opportunities?
A BA (Hons) degree offers along recognised path into a professional career in all industries. While this degree offers the same as any other in this respect, the main career opportunities are specifically in the music industry.
