Course Aims:
To enable the students to build the basic elements of a Fine Art vocabulary and to equip them with the confidence to operate with freedom and purpose within a wide choice of media. The course which runs at Southport is Year 1 of the BA Fine Art Hons course. Years 2 & 3 continue at Liverpool John Moores University.
Course Content:
The course is semester-based and designed around Core (compulsory) and Option (selected from a choice) Modules and each level encompasses 120 credits towards the total of 360 credits which are required for the award of Degree with Honours. During the first semester at Southport College, students will complete one 36 credit and two 12 Credit modules while the second semester offers one 24 Credit and two 12 Credit Core Modules and one 12 Credit Module.
Level 1 allows students to explore areas such as:
Visual research
Drawing
Painting
Fabrication
Construction
Installation
Ceramics
Printmaking
Electronic Image Generation
Time Based Media
Studio practice is supported by a programme of practical, technical inductions and a schedule of historical, cultural and theoretical stucy. Students are expected to negotiate individual programmes of study to inform their practice, which are clarified with learning contracts and underpinned by tutorials, seminars, lectures and demonstrations.

Individual student progress is monitored through regular tutorials and seminars. Major assessment periods occur at the end of each semester upon the completion of modules, when students are required to exhibit their practice, submit and present written work as appropriate.

During the course the students are required to pay studio fees and will need to provide art materials etc.
Duration:
The course is normally offered as a full-time course (30 weeks); however a part-time mode of study may be negotiable.

- Imagination and ability to use colour and form,
- Ability to develop and express ideas,

- Reasonable clarity of expression in speech & writing,
- Enthusiasm, motivation and commitment.
